KNOW ABOUT YOUR LIVER, CARE FOR IT.

BE AWARE

Liver diseases contribute a major share to the bulk of the diseases causing sufferings and mortality in the community. Liver diseases can be acute or chronic. Acute liver diseases present with Fever, Fatigue, high coloured urine, yellow eyes or jaundice and altered sensorium in a short span of days or few weeks. Classical example is Acute viral hepatitis A, B, E that can cause community level outbreaks. Some of the other causes of acute hepatitis are drug induced liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis. Diagnosis at the early stage of the disease and initiating the optimal treatment is of prime importance as delay can result in Coma and requirement for liver transplantation for saving the life of the patient in some cases. Early Diagnosis is very important in taking measures to prevent the community spread of diseases as in the case of viral hepatitis A and B.

Chronic liver diseases progress slowly and remain silent in the body for a long period of time until there is extreme liver damage causing swelling of legs, abdominal distention due to fluid, muscle wasting, vomiting of blood, memory disturbances. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis B and C are few common liver diseases that run a chronic course. These chronic liver disease patients can eventually develop liver cancer or succumb to death due to infections, bleeding unless liver transplantation is offered.

As a part of the social commitment Badr Al Samaa Hospital, Ruwi has recently initiated a liver clinic. Our objectives are to create community awareness regarding liver diseases, Offer preventive measures like Hepatitis B Vaccination, find out people with high risk of liver diseases like those consuming alcohol, those having family history of liver diseases, those having components of metabolic syndrome like Diabetes and obesity. In established cases of liver diseases we offer evidence based treatment and ensure regular follow-ups to monitor changes in liver and watch for the development of liver cancer which can be cured if detected in initial stages. We have imaging facilities with expert radiologists for diagnosing early liver cancer. If the patient presents with life threatening conditions like bleeding, altered sensorium, infections we provide intensive unit care with medical and endoscopic management.

Our appeal to the society is to adopt a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, maintain normal body weight, avoid alcohol and smoking, get proper treatment for your diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypothyroidism, and vaccinate to prevent hepatitis B The status of your liver can be easily accessed by simple blood tests and imaging of the liver .If any abnormality detected get expert opinion and advice, maintain regular follow up as advised.
